When I decided to do a comprehensive about face in my life, to check out my heart and pursue a career in firefighting, I did not know how essential mentorship and advocacy would be. I know today that I could not have become a fire fighter without mentors and urges, steadily positioned in my side.

Fire fighting is just one of the dozens of livelihood branded as “a non-traditional livelihood for women”–non-traditional because women comprise less than 25% of overall employment. Today women constitute roughly 4.8 percent of firefighters from the fire service in the United States.

Let me give you a notion of the relative infancy of women in the flame service institution. While history has listed women helping their communities fight fires because the 1800s and throughout times once the men were off to wars, the primary female, career firefighter from the US was hired in 1973. If yours was first hired, I was amazed to find out I was working along side the first woman hired within my section. I was incredulous, as I realized the manic stages of women in the fire service-that I was currently part of. Inside my mind, this very first women fire fighter of my department was (and is) surviving history.

When I began the journey of becoming a firefighter, I observed I had been just one of a handful of women among my peers. I immersed myself into all the standard activities that will eventually find me fighting fires, responding to health crises, and birthing babies that are looking in the future STAT, in the garage, on to the floor, NOW.

I took responder clinical classes, fire science classes https://bestfiendshack.com/ along with physical agility classes to organize myself. I worked on an ambulance and worked-out such as a fiend. While these activities certainly helped me to become a fire fighter, the most useful thing I did in that time period, would be to associate with folks that were to become my teachers and urges.

As I found myself on heaps of ride-a-longs with different fire service agencies, as I found myself in a position as a brand new volunteer fire fighter–able to teach with and learn from seasoned firefighters–the mentors began to make their appearance.

I found women fire fighters who encouraged me talked to me about their experiences in their career beginnings. I was encouraged when firefighters, have been men, inserted their supportive comments to our conversations. All these men and women gave me their time passed on hints, hints and advice, what I could enjoy at a livelihood, and also those matters I would find challenging as a bigger statured girl. They said I can do it, to carry on, I would get there. I excitedly consumed it all in, such as a curious kid looking up wide-eyed and open mouthed at narrative time.
